Cynthia K. Richey, Library Director

Mount Lebanon Public Library

16 Castle Shannon Blvd

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15228-2252

Dear Ms. Richey:

While attending the May 21meeting of the Board of Directors of the Allegheny County Library Association (ACLA), I learned that there is a vacancy in the Director position, serving the South ACLA Region, on the Board of Directors of the Allegheny County Library Association. With this letter, I hereby request consideration for my election, by the library directors of the South ACLA Region, as the Director to represent the South libraries on the ACLA Board.

Please note that I reside within the South ACLA Region, having lived at 633 Royce Avenue in the Home-Rule Municipality of Mount Lebanon since 1985. I also lived at 1430 Kelton Avenue in the Borough of Dormont from 1978 to 1985.

As you may be aware, I have many years of experience with public libraries in Allegheny County, as well as having attended many meetings of both the ACLA Board and the Board of :Directors of the :Allegheny Regional Asset District, over more than a decade.

I served as a Life Trustee, on the Board of Trustees, of the Andrew Carnegie Free Library and Music Hall from 1995 to 2000. This included serving in the position of Library Treasurer from 1995 to 1996. I also was the delegate from the Andrew Carnegie Free Library to ACLA from 1995 to 1999.

Starting as the Library Historian for the Andrew Carnegie Free Library, since leaving the Library Board I am now a noted authority on the life and philanthropies of Andrew Carnegie. I was the Consulting Editor for the April, 1999 issue of Cobblestone Magazine, the theme of which was the life and philanthropies of Andrew Carnegie. I also participated in a three-person panel for the Carnegie Libraries: Challenges and Solutions educational session at the 2006 National Preservation Conference in Pittsburgh. I maintain a web site on the History of Andrew Carnegie and Carnegie Libraries at < http://www.andrewcarnegie.cc >.

I have read the web page titled, “Board Member Job Description,” on the ACLA web site, and I find these duties acceptable. I certainly would work to maintain good communications with all of the libraries within the South Region.

You can read a fairly comprehensive biography of me, and the many activities I have been involved with, at the following link which is posted on my web sites:

(Hold down the “Control” button, while clicking on this link, to reach my bio.).

I hope you, and other representatives from the ACLA South Region, will feel free to contact me with other questions and comments, regarding this application, at Telephone: 412-561-7876 or E-Mail: < gawalsh@andrewcarnegie.cc >.

I look forward to the opportunity to work with you and other South Region representatives, to ensure the South Region is well represented on the ACLA Board.

Sincerely yours,

Glenn A. Walsh
