Carnegie celebration continues with brown bag lecture

This week's celebration of the Carnegie Library's reopening as a reading room continues today as the brown bag lunch series launches upstairs from noon to 1 p.m.

Patrons are invited to purchase a $5 bag lunch downtown from participating restaurants -- available for pickup between 11 and 11:45 a.m. They can also bring their own lunch.

The lecture will be held in the upstairs meeting space, where drinks and sweets will be furnished, according to Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation member Lauren Jones. The Carnegie is at LaGrange and West Broad streets at the Newnan Court Square.

The first lecture will be by Dr. Jamil Zainaldin, Georgia Humanities Council president and a constitutional scholar and historian. His lecture, "Miracle in Philadelphia," will be on the creation of the Constitution. Limited seating. Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation is taking advance reservations. On Friday, renowned constitutional scholar and author Linda R. Monk will explore the challenges facing America in its infancy and how the framers of the Constitution rose to meet them. She presents "Creating the Constitution: The Road to Philadelphia and Back Again" at 7 p.m. in Carnegie's upstairs meeting space.

Copies of Monk's book, "The Words We Live By: Your Annotated Guide to the Constitution," will be available ahead of time at Scott's Bookstore. A book signing will follow the lecture, with refreshments provided. Cost to attend the lecture is $5 for people who are not members of the NCLF. Tickets are available at Scott's Bookstore.

Saturday morning the celebration concludes when families are invited to a block party from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. outside Carnegie. There will be a special visit by U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, who will read to toddlers in the library from 10 to 10:30 a.m., then from 10:30 to 11 he will hold a Youth Talkback.

The Talkback, a town-hall style meeting with youth only, will have Isakson speaking a few minutes and then taking questions from the invited students. Each of the high schools will be sending three students from their civics classes, and joining them will be the 16 members of the new Newnan Youth Council.

There will be jump houses, ice cream, face painting, games and other activities on that special Saturday. Carnegie will be open for families to explore.
